Memories of Shri Hemant Shah
In my student days, I rarely used to be in the temple of discipline (college building). We use to hang around in the parking lot but even through I was in the building for a very hours, the memories of the Institute still haunts me and drive me back to the campus time and again. One spends 12 years of life in a school and only 3 years in a college but then also the memories of the college days always over power the memories of the school days. HL has given me a sense of responsibility and belongingness.
Memories of Dr.S.D.Desai
Hi, Everybody!
In my treasure of memories I have a pictures gallery in which there are smiling faces, ever young all these years, gleaming with brilliance and warmth. I look forward to the Global Meet of HL Alumni with excitement believe me, I am still capable of it, thanks to the maugdhya the blossom of youthful creativity at HL has bestowed me with !
The panorama section of my gallery teems with faces that warmly greeted me in 1964, the time I was perhaps no match to their expectations, and yet they never made me feel I wasn’t, and those that kept emerging in it decade after decade till the closing years of my career and beyond. There used to be promise in their eyes and as years passed I saw and heard of the promise turning into performance in business and industry, public affairs and law, sports and arts, education and social development, even police force and army there would hardly be any respectable area where they are not !
And wherever they are placed, some of them modestly as well, what distinguishes them is a set of personal qualities, among which are a sense of integrity, a spirit of sharing and a zest for life. Look around while you are here and you would bear me out and perhaps add: they are all absolutely modest about what they are and have been doing!
Well done, HL Alumni Association. You have developed the knack of doing everything in style and with finish. My warm welcome to all Hl’ites to the H L Garden of commerce ( HL GC), which cultivates flowers of a distinctive blend of colour and freshness and fragrance.
You do know Gujarati, don’t you? These lines flash on my mind-
This sight I know not I’ll ever get to see again,
Let me take in the ocean of fragrance that it is.

BOND REMAINS……
Since 1987, I am associated with H.L.College so my bond with HL is something unique in its own way. I joined HLCC as a visiting faculty for computer science subject and nurtured students for carriers in IT. It was always a challenge to be part of HL College in terms of academic inputs. It was a great experience to work with principals Dr.R.L.Sanghvi, Prof.V.S.Dala, Prof.K.R.Patel, Prof.S.B.Vohra and Prof.G.A.Pathak.
My association with HL College and the Ahmedabad Education Society resulted into a challenge for me to lead two new institutes for IT education BCA in 1999 and MCA in 2000. Today I am heading both the institutes HLICA (BCA) and AESICS (MCA) which are part of H.L.Campus.IT education at both the institutes has always attracted brightest students from the region. The HL campus culture of high quality education with all round development and opportunities to the students have produced successful IT graduates and post graduates in last two years. I am confident that the trend will continue in the future.
Memories of Shri K.D.Shah
My years (1966-1969) in HL were memorable in terms of learning and extra-curricular activities. Prof.Jhala – Vasavada and Prof.P.A.Trivedi were excellent teachers to whom I give credit for whatever I am today. Prin.S.V.Desai was excellent in terms of self development and confidence building. The environment and atmosphere in and around the college was very encouraging for achieving all- round progress and development.
Memories of Prof.Mrs.H.R.Yadav
Entering the portal of HLCC in 1959 was like taking second birth. I was nurtured and groomed by a second family of caring and devoted teachers who groomed me so well both as a student and as an individual that I could make a leap into their teaching faculty with ease and confidence. It is at HLCC that I have spent fruitfully most of my life and I experience a sense of pride and joy that it will be from HLCC that I will step out to take up the quiet challenges that life brings in one’s retirement long live HLCC !!
Memories of Dr.Bihari Kanaiyalal
I joined the college in 1941. All students of the college did not attend classes for nearly 2 terms to participate, in one form or the other, in the famous “QUIT INDIA” movement of 1942. In 1944 at the annual day of the college function at premabhai Hall, I played flute, and received excellent ovation and won a special medal. This was followed also in 1945.
It was a matter of my humble contribution to the college when the Ph.D. (Economics) degree was conferred upon me at the Gujarat University convocation as the first student of the college and also first of Gujarat University. Professor S.V.Desai, a very eminent economist, was the principal who was a great teacher, a sound disciplinarian and a person totally devoted to education refusing offers of other high offices.
The students fraternity was entirely disciplined neatly dressed and sincere to learning, so were the professors.
Memories of Prof. (Mrs.) H.D.Trivedi
Memories of HL
The HL campus has been a second home to me. First I was a student, then a faculty member, and later moved on to BKMIBA-HLBBA as the first director. In trying to recall my experiences, I experience Buridan’s ass problem of what to pick and what to leave. Three things however have been etched on my memory.
In 1962, when I joined as a student was in splendid isolation as the only girl student in my class a condition not without advantage. I got more than usual attention and could very closely interact with the faculty members, who were protective and supportive. However one misses interaction with class mates. Second the robust democratic direct election of General Secretary was a classic lesson in H.L.discipline! All bell rings everyone is in the class back to quiet studies.
And finally the wonderfully vibrant, and collaborative culture of the staff room and boisterous yet disciplined classes which gave the time and space to new hesitant incumbents to find their feet and blossom.
I salute and thank this wondrous HL student fraternity for their cooperation all throughout and successfully organizing this global meet.

H.L.As I Know….
I feel happy to write a few lines about H.L.College of commerce wherein I had privilege and pleasure to be a student. After completing my matriculation in relatively less known educational institution, I felt extremely happy to enter H.L.Commerce of college which had a towering reputation amongst the college as a first rate institution in commerce education in Gujarat and even beyond Gujarat.ahmedabad education society, which established H.L., has been following a very high standard in the selection of its staff, professors and above all its principal. H.L. was lucky to get at its initial stage, an able and exceedingly competent principal, shri S.V.Desai, who has built up, H.L.which enjoys a reputation rare for a college. Principal Desai laid very sound tradition of academic achievements and strict standards of discipline. What principal Desai did was not just teach economics at H.L, but with the help of whole team of H.L.professors, he worked on moulding the character of the students who passed through. It is encouraging to note that the principal and the professors who have followed him have continued the good work. I really feel happy and proud in having been an HL’ ite.
Memories of Prof.Prafull A.Trivedi
In 1942 I joined HL as a student and as a Faculty in 1949 till I retired in 1986. Like a loyal Hindu wife, I have served all my working life with HL College of commerce. As a student I learnt under great-teachers like prof.S.V.Desai, prof.Dahiwala, prof.Bhir, prof.V.K.R.V.Rao and prof.Gurumukh Nihal Singh. Under them I learnt-discipline and a zest and habit to keep learning all my life.Principal Sanghvi gave me facility to become chartered accountant during my service. As a teacher and professor-in-charge of cricket, I got tremendous response and love from my students. My wife, three daughters and son studied at this institute. Thus HL has become a past of my life and family. HL is the best… |
